A fixture of the city's skyline, the Roanoke Star is, as its name suggests, a 10,000-pound star-shaped neon light. Visible from 60 miles away and standing 1,045 feet above the town, the Star has been flashing red, white and blue light over the people of Roanoke since the 1950s. It stands at the top of Mill Mountain, a couple miles north of downtown.
