The Art Museum of Western Virginia collects and displays 19th- and 20th-century American Art, as well as contemporary art and decorative works, with special attention paid to artists from the region and the surrounding Appalachian Mountains. The Museum is funded well enough to also purchase masterworks by such critical darlings as Robert Riggs, Childe Hassam, John Singer Sargent, and many more. In recent years, it has been the recipient of a new, 81,000-square-foot facility designed by architect Randall Stout—a sleek, sustainable "green" structure in the heart of downtown, near Jackson Park.
